CPSU

PROJECT INFORMATION

Company

The Community and Public Sectors Union (CPSU) represents workers in various industries Project Overview. They work collectively to ensure workers are safe at work; have fair rights, pay and conditions; and have a strong voice at work.

Project Overview

Following the successful purchase of a 6-floor office building in the heart of Surry Hills, and the lease of a newly built, A-grade office space in central Canberra, TRUE was engaged for the workplace strategy and design of both projects. To formulate the design brief and better understand business activities, we conducted a series of workshops with business units for each location, discussing familiar subjects such as team adjacencies and meeting room requirements, along with some more topical needs relating to working from home and video conferencing provision.

TRUE SOLUTION

Sydney

As landlords, CPSU chose to sub-lease 2 floorplates and occupy 4 of the remaining 6, including the top floor which comprised an external terrace wrapping around 3 sides and would be used as a dedicated meeting and training suite. The remaining 3 are work floors, occupied by staff, and split into groups identified through the workplace strategy. Each floor has a mix of open-plan work areas, management offices, small-medium meeting rooms and lockers to accommodate flexible working. The concept for the design leveraged the industrial nature of the building with exposed ceilings, polished concrete floors, and plywood finishes.

Canberra

In stark contrast to Sydney, the new office space that the CPSU Canberra team relocated to is a brand-new purpose-built building across a single floorplate, flooded by natural daylight from external elevations. However, like Sydney, the brief was to accommodate teams in neighbourhoods connected to management offices and a range of meeting and training rooms with lockers to facilitate flexible working. The key feature of this design is the large open breakout area that adjoins a member’s lounge that staff are encouraged to use for informal meetings and team collaborations.

Melbourne

The Melbourne project aimed to replicate the same design elements in Melbourne as in Canberra and Sydney to give a familiar look and feel throughout all offices nationally. However, we encountered a few challenges in sourcing trades due to the proximity to Christmas and the tight timeframes. Despite these obstacles, we were able to achieve the Practical Completion date and hand over an office that the client was extremely happy with.

We are always striving to provide value to our clients, and with an engagement for 3 simultaneous projects, TRUE were pleased to provide CPSU with a combined project discount across both projects for design and workplace strategy services.

TRUE’s cost-plus model and their expertise in project management meant they were a company that we felt we could work with, and more importantly, trust.
